On February 13, Conexus Indiana’s Hardtech Innovators Network, powered by the Indiana Economic Development Corporation, gathered at SEP’s headquarters in Carmel, Indiana. Approximately 115 professionals from Indiana’s hardtech sector came together to explore the evolving intersection of hardware and software.
The Hardtech Innovators Network is an educational platform designed to connect advanced manufacturing and logistics professionals with hardtech entrepreneurs. By fostering relationships among engineers, product developers, corporate innovators and entrepreneurs, the network helps strengthen Indiana’s leadership in advanced manufacturing and logistics.
Hardtech is defined as physical product innovation that includes manufacturing (hardware) and technology (software) components, a focus for Indiana.

The evening’s theme, “From Hardware to Code: Trends and Best Practices in Embedded Software Development,” was explored through presentations from engineering leaders at Indiana-based SEP, MESH Systems and Glassboard. Following the presentations, attendees had the opportunity to network, exchanging ideas, exploring collaborations and building new connections.
Using Software to Accelerate Hardware and Firmware Prototyping
by Nathan Sickler, Lead Software Engineer at SEP
Nathan shared insights from the development of an IoT shower faucet from his home during the COVID-19 pandemic, emphasizing the importance of a structured discovery phase to align teams and clarify project goals. His case study highlighted how strong infrastructure, clear communication and iterative development are key to successfully integrating hardware and software.
Prototypes to Products: A Story on Collaboration & Communication
by Ryne Rayburn, Director of Things Engineering at MESH Systems
Ryne discussed the journey from early-stage prototypes to fully developed products, focusing on the role of collaboration and effective communication. One example discussed was the HEINZ REMIX, a customizable digital sauce dispenser, which MESH Systems helped develop in collaboration with several partners. He provided insights into managing the complexities of product development and ensuring smooth integration between hardware and software.
Best Practices for Safety-Critical Systems
by Drew Westrick, CTO and Devin Jaenicke, Lead Engineer, Electrical & Embedded Engineering at Glassboard
Drew and Devin explored best practices from Glassboard for developing safety-critical systems, stressing the importance of rigorous testing, adherence to industry standards and meticulous design processes to ensure product reliability and user safety.

The Hardtech Innovators Network event, sponsored by the IU Luddy School of Informatics, Computing and Engineering Shoemaker Innovation Center and IU Innovates, highlighted the strength of expertise within Indiana’s hardtech community, reinforcing the importance of collaboration and shared learning. As the state continues to drive innovation in advanced manufacturing and logistics, these gatherings provide valuable opportunities for professionals to stay ahead of industry trends and expand their networks.
